The Base of Vaastu Shastra

The simple meaning of Vaastu word is – architecture i.e. construction of building, house, temple etc. In this type of construction art and science are contained in Vastu Shastra. The art side consists of attractive miniature and gross sculpture while the basic aspect of sense of science lies in the fundamental five element which are – sky, air, fire, water and earth.

Sky (Aakash): Sky means – infinite zero. Within this void, the whole universe has made its existence. The sky in the building is the courtyard. The central part of the plot is considered to be the place of Brahma which is kept open. This brings in pure air and the contaminated air goes out. This also brings in Sun Energy necessary for life. Construct the building in such a way that the Eastern and Northern parts are low as compared to South and West in order to avoid the afternoon Sun rays which are harmful to health. Thus In the principles of Vastu Shastra, there is a provision of maintaining the SKY element properly.

Air(Vaayu): Air surrounds the Earth in which many types of gases are mixed. Air also has oxygen (Praan Vayu). There is need to maintain continuous flow of oxygen (Praan Vayu) in the building, hence the eastern direction and the north side of the building are kept more open.

Fire (Agni): Sun is the source of life on Earth. The rays coming from the Sun on the Earth bring light along with heat. Life is transmitted in all the vegetation on the earth with this light and heat coming from the Sun. Production of food by the vegetation is not possible without sunlight. In this process, the plants utilize carbon dioxide gas and releases oxygen gas. This oxygen (Praan Vayu) is the life-force of all creatures on our Planet.

Water (Jal): There are principles to decide the direction of having source of clean water in a plot and the direction of waste water drainage. If the clean water used is affected by the sun’s rays in the day and the rays of the moon in the night, then the use of this kind of water brings good health to the person living in the house.

Earth (Prithvi): Earth (Prithvi) is a Planet revolving around the Sun (soorya). Scientists believe that the Earth is an immense large Magnet. Due to the magnetic substances within the earth, the earth has got magnetic power. It has two poles – the North Pole and the South Pole.

Earth’s magnetic currents move from the North Pole to the South Pole and the effect of these currents falls on everyone on Earth. Iron also exists in elemental form in our body and indirectly we are also affected by these magnetic currents. If we bring another North Pole near the North Pole then there is distraction and if you bring the South Pole near the North Pole then there is attraction. The same attraction and distraction happens with the South Pole. That is, the distraction is between the like poles and attraction is between unlike poles. The architectural principle that emphasizes to load in the southern direction lies in this magnetic formula. The impact of day-night cycle on earth, the annual speed of the sun, the earth’s gravitational power, the northern and the southern pole, etc. affects humans and all other creatures. The directions of the earth are also divided on this basis. Four directions and four angles are considered.
